A Bar or Bat Mitzvah is the transition from childhood to adulthood. For girls this transition occurs at the age of twelve and for boys at the age of thirteen. Bar Mitzvah literally means "son of the commandment" and the implication is that now the young man or woman is responsible for his own actions.
